Cavan has a well earned reputation for excellent coarse and pike fishing. There are also many fine game angling river stretches and wild Brown Trout lake fisheries. For coarse fishing in County Cavan, there is no charge or permit required. To fish for Brown Trout, anglers must obtain a permit from the relevant fishery board. Permits are available locally close to brown trout fisheries.
There is water here to suit all tastes. The angler seeking large open waters can choose from the wider stretches of the rivers or large lakes such as Gowna, Oughter,Sillian, Upper Lough Erne, Lough McNean and Lough Ramor. Those in search of more intimate and secluded surroundings will find many smaller lakes and river stretches.
The Match angler can participate in any of the three and four day angling festivals held in the county. The famous British King of Clubs is held annually in County Cavan. Local festivals are also held at Arvagh, Belturbet, Gowna and Cootehill.
